“So, why are you looking to leave your current role?”

“It is not often that a man can make opportunities for himself. But he can put himself in such shape that when or if the opportunities come he is ready.” ― Theodore Roosevelt

My Twitter followers (@SarahDJohnston) want to know how to answer the question, “So, why are you looking to leave your current role?”

✖ Don’t focus on negatives. I often hear job seekers say things about poor leadership or toxic culture. Negativity doesn’t look pretty on anyone.

✔ Be authentic. If you are taking a position with less responsibility because you are wanting more time at home with your wife/dogs/kids– then say that.

✔ Be positive and focus on the future. For example: “As much as I love the people at my current organization, I feel like I’ve stopped being challenged. What I like about this role, is that there is a lot of strategy and planning involved– two of my cores strengths”.
